Free Nursery Education

Nursery education is available to children from 3 until 5 years for 15 hours each week.

  • The school day is from 9.00am (when a free healthy breakfast is served) until 3.00p.m. Classroom sessions are 9.00 until 11.30 a.m. and 12.30p.m. until 3.00p.m.
Lunch is served at 11.30 following which the children go out to play until 12.30. Parents may choose how to organise this time to suit family needs.
If more than 15 hours are required, parents may purchase times between 8.00am and 6.00pm at a cost of £3 per hour or £2 per hour, unwaged.
  • The classroom is organised to provide for the whole curriculum. The school is organised to give children as much independence as possible. We use a simplified High Scope approach - plan, do, review.
    .

Parents are invited to plan with their child, the children complete the tasks and then discuss them with their peers and teachers. This gives parents an insight into their child's nursery school experience.

  • The school deputy head is the classroom teacher. She manages a team of qualified support staff who plan classroom activities that meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and which allow the children to follow their own interests at their own stage of development.

  • The main classroom covers the rest of the curriculum including maths, literacy, construction, sand and water, tactile and role play, (Click a photo to see a larger image)

  • The art room has mixed paints, paints to mix, woodwork, clay, scissors glue, collage materials and a computer.

  • Outdoor play is a vital element of the day. Children use the outside freely and may chose to move from inside to out as they wish. The curriculum is reflected in outdoor play activities although the range of activities clearly depends on the time of the year.

  • The Early Years Foundation Stage is first stage of the National Curriculum. It offers guidance and structure for appropriate learning and activities for children from birth to 5 years. This is continued in primary school for children up to 5 years. We display our classroom planning in both rooms so that parents may see the learning objectives, and the activities provided. Suggestions and ideas are always welcomed from children and parents. Staff follow children's interests and plan them into the curriculum.
  • Regular assessments and written observations are made showing developmental steps and achievements. Areas of concern such as speech delay are recorded and monitored. Each child has a portfolio and their own assessment book. This enables staff to check progress and plan for areas not yet achieved. Records are shared with parents who are offered the opportunity to see the records whenever they wish. Observations are undertaken, formally each term and informally daily. This record is sent to the child's receiving primary school at transition. Each term a progress report is written for 3 and 4 year olds.
  • Special Educational Needs.
Children with additional needs are welcome and are supported in the classroom to enable them to access the curriculum and participate fully in the life of the school.
